If you have an Irish

Sat ,31/07/2010

If you have an Irish Setter, maybe an Irish dog name like Conan or Conner would suit him.

* Encourage the whole family to take part in naming your dog.

* Give your dog a name that relates to or says something about your own interests. For instance, if you like to hike and camp, perhaps ?Scout? would be a good name for your dog.

* Pick out several favorite names, then try them on your new dog for a few days to see what you like and what he seems to respond to.

* Avoid names that could be confused with standard commands like ?come,? ?stay,? etc.

* Finally, do you love the name? After all, you will be saying it daily (mostly with pleasure, sometimes with exasperation) for the next 10-plus years.

Five minutes with … the Fitzsimmonses.(Neighbor)

Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL), November, 2003 by Williams, Amy E.

Byline: Amy E. Williams Daily Herald Correspondent You’ve got a pretty good idea in mind of what you want to do with your home, but no idea how to do it. That’s when Huntley resident Wanda Fitzsimmons steps in. In the past several years, Fitzsimmons has helped hundreds local residents, especially those in Sun City, decorate their walls, ceilings and floors.

You may have seen her garden mural in Sun City resident Carlee Petelle’s master bedroom bathroom. Or perhaps you’ve seen the stenciling in Klaus and Mary Pohlschmidt’s dining room and the Venetian plaster in their kitchen. It’s all her work

‘All I want is a room somewhere, far away from the cold night air, with one enormous chair …’ AS promised, I have been house hunting. Before setting out I made a feeble attempt to do something sensible like rent – cheaply. Oh dear. I’m a big woman, not built on an appropriate scale for living in any of the following: a cupboard, a studio, a basement, under the eaves, up the fire escape (with my piano?) or down an alley (too scary). My furniture, like me is out of scale and character for anything I can afford and to be honest I can’t really afford anything at all. Still, the marital home is sold with completion due any day so I must find myself somewhere to go.

What about buying then? Estate agents get an awfully bad press but you know, they really have my sympathy. It wouldn’t be enough for them to be mind readers because we don’t even know our own minds. I sensibly listed myself as interested in a two bedroomed doer-upper in a ‘cheap’ (ie up-and-coming) area, then immediately fell madly in love with a three bedroomed, totally done up cottage in a premium village location.

Needless to say, I can’t really afford it. It carries a hefty premium for having character, a history and unlimited charm so the price doesn’t really reflect the more practical drawbacks such as no allocated parking and a three-way ownership of the septic tank.

But no matter how hard I try, I cannot look at it rationally but emotionally move in, fill the courtyard garden with fragrance and flowers, arrange my furniture, pictures and books and have friends over for a BBQ.

It’s all just delightful. There is even the perfect place for my piano.

What to do? I’m so afraid of making a silly decision which I will later regret, I am tempted to ask for a second opinion, a blokey one, for balance. My son.

At this point I find myself reading Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch. I didn’t mean to. I took my grandson to the library as usual and it was Women’s Week or Day or something and there were all these feminist books gathered in one place so I grabbed a handful. Like everything else I’m doing now, it’s all 40 years too late. I should have read it when it was written in the 1960s.

It’s rather unpalatable to me now to be honest, partly because so much of it is spot-on and I look back and see that I blundered into just about every trap, error and misconstruction available to my gender – despite being mistakenly under the impression that I was liberated.

Still, there’s something wrong with Greer’s writing

STROLLERS THEATRE

The material has problems

The challenge with reviewing a show like Strollers Theatre’s latest, Cat’s Paw, which opened Sept. 10 at the Battel/ Theatre, is that the actors, the director and the crew have done an absolutely fine job. But the material itself is another story. Cat’s Paw is rife with problems

Community comes to aid of family facing hard holidays Amid a money

Clay County residents are rallying around an unemployed single mother from Orange Park who is on the brink of foreclosure while trying to help her 12-year-old son, who has cystic fibrosis, battle a life-threatening lung infection.

Friends call Jena Beckman and her four children – Ty, Madyson, Connor and Garrett – a precious family deserving of help with their seemingly insurmountable financial problems.

“God uses people like you and me to be his hands and feet. We are hoping our generous county will help the Beckmans keep their home and be able to pay their electric and water bills for months to come,” said Pam Mullarkey, who created the Jena Beckman Fund at Compass Bank for donations.

Joanne Register is collecting items and hosting a garage sale Friday to benefit the family.

“The outpouring has been great. One family donated a mini- storage unit full of stuff. We’ve been putting out e-mails to businesses and friends … People are in a charitable mood.”

Beckman’s Bible study class at Christ Church Jacksonville adopted the family for Christmas.

Recently, Beckman left her waitress job at the Blue Grotto on Fleming Island to stay home with her 12-year-old son, Ty, who was born with cystic fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. Doctors told her he wouldn’t live to age 6.

“He’s been a trooper,” she said. “He’s been through so much.”

Ty recently developed a severe infection and is too sick for school. His mother administers 10 doses of antibiotics per day through a port in Ty’s chest. A visiting nurse provides some help with his care.

Meanwhile, Beckman said her only income ended in November when her ex-husband lost his job and discontinued child support payments.

“It’s very frustrating to hear about bailouts when you are just hanging on. It’s all I can do to keep my focus on Ty,” Beckman said, adding that she discontinued cable and her telephone, she’s sold possessions on eBay and most recently took in a tenant.

“It’s not ideal for a single woman and explaining the strange man living in my garage,” she said. “My hands are tied. I’m open to any ideas

Residential Phone Directory to Look Up Personal Numbers No Longer Automatically Delivered in Seven Canadian Cities

Residential Phone Directory to Look Up Personal Numbers No Longer Automatically Delivered in Seven Canadian Cities

Market Wire, June, 2010

Residential phone directories, entirely devoted to finding a person, are now available only upon request in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, the Ottawa-Gatineau area and Quebec City. Yellow Pages Group (YPG), Canada’s largest print, online and mobile directory provider, launched this initiative in accordance with changing user habits around the way people look for residential numbers.

“An increasing number of Canadians, particularly in urban areas, use our online and mobile resources YellowPages.ca and Canada411.ca to find residential phone numbers,” said Marc P. Tellier, President and CEO of Yellow Pages Group. “Our priority with the residential directory is to make listings available to all users in the format of their choice. All who wish to receive a printed directory can request one while those who prefer to use our online or mobile resources will be equally supported.”

In 2005, YPG implemented a 24-month distribution cycle of the residential directory in select Canadian cities, with residents having to request a directory during non-distribution years. The resulting demand for the residential directory averaged below one percent while searches for personal phone numbers on YPG online properties have almost doubled since the program’s inception.

“The results of our 24-month initiative clearly indicate that large urban centres are ready for a residential directory by request only program,” continued Tellier.

The distribution by request of the residential directory will result in a reduction of paper consumption, decreasing residential directory distribution by over 5 million copies per year across Canada.

NO CHANGE TO YELLOW PAGES DIRECTORY DISTRIBUTION

In the seven markets no longer automatically receiving their residential directory, distribution of the Yellow Pages directory will continue on an annual basis. The Yellow Pages directory is used to find a business by category or by name and features local environmental information and government resources

GLOBAL PINOY THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE, THE

0 Comments | Manila Times, The, Sep 20, 2006 | by Macabenta, Greg B

Recent news about domestics in Singapore, many of them Filipinos, being subjected to unfair wage reductions on top of unreasonable deductions is just one more example of the hardships that overseas Filipino workers have to endure.

Going abroad and landing a job that earns a decent wage is like going through the eye of a needle.

In Singapore the wages of hapless domestics are docked for breakage, for unauthorized consumption of food and drinks, and for the fees imposed by employment agencies. They can go for as long as six months without receiving wages in order to pay off debts. It is virtual slavery.

But even that is not as heart-rending as the fate of Baby, a young girl from Albay. She had managed to go to Lebanon to work as a maid in a wealthy household, just shortly before the recent war broke out.

Baby’s employers were literally starving her, giving her only rice to eat and nothing else. The Filipino maid in another household in the same condominium complex learned about her plight and took pity on her. Behind the backs of their employers, Baby would lower a plastic bag to the unit below and her kababayan would fill that with food.

No longer able to stand the cruel treatment, Baby escaped and found employment in the home of an elderly couple. She was treated much better, but the fighting broke out. She and other Filipino maids found their way to the Philippine Embassy from where they were shipped back to the Philippines. All she brought home from her two months of torment was one dollar.

Yet, the rewards for the lucky ones are considerable, especially in Europe. At 10 an hour, which is a relatively low rate, but still almost equivalent to US$20, a maid in London can earn as much as P7,500 a day or just a shade below P200,000 a month.

It was thus with a deep sigh that I watched a Manila TV program showing young women taking a special course in order to become “super-maids.” They were being taught, not only the finer points of cleaning the house and doing other menial tasks, but also how to apply first aid in an emergency, and how to care for an infant.

It struck me that the only difference between what they would be doing in a foreign household and the duties of Filipino nurses in hospitals is that the latter need to take a government-qualifying exam.

But, like the domestics, nurses are being exploited, too-and the exploitation starts even before they leave for abroad.

The recent scandal involving the alleged leakage of test questions in the last board exams for nurses has revealed a racket in the review classes and another racket in the postexam ceremonials that generate big bucks for the perpetrators.

I had written an article about the fact that the alleged “leakage” could not have affected the results of the nursing test, because of the fact that out of 2,500 questions submitted by nursing board examiners, only 500 questions would eventually be chosen by a computer and printed close to the hour of the exams.

In other words, even if the questionnaires containing the 2,500 questions were to be released, those taking the exams would still not be sure of passing. Small wonder then that the passing rate was a pitiful 41.2 percent.

But I pointed out that the companies offering review classes and ostensibly leaking the test questions were raking in a lot of money. Cora Aonuevo, a professor at the UP College of Nursing, confirmed this in an e-mail:

“Dear Mr
