Clay County residents are rallying around an unemployed single mother from Orange Park who is on the brink of foreclosure while trying to help her 12-year-old son, who has cystic fibrosis, battle a life-threatening lung infection.
Friends call Jena Beckman and her four children – Ty, Madyson, Connor and Garrett – a precious family deserving of help with their seemingly insurmountable financial problems.
“God uses people like you and me to be his hands and feet. We are hoping our generous county will help the Beckmans keep their home and be able to pay their electric and water bills for months to come,” said Pam Mullarkey, who created the Jena Beckman Fund at Compass Bank for donations.
Joanne Register is collecting items and hosting a garage sale Friday to benefit the family.
“The outpouring has been great. One family donated a mini- storage unit full of stuff. We’ve been putting out e-mails to businesses and friends … People are in a charitable mood.”
Beckman’s Bible study class at Christ Church Jacksonville adopted the family for Christmas.
Recently, Beckman left her waitress job at the Blue Grotto on Fleming Island to stay home with her 12-year-old son, Ty, who was born with cystic fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. Doctors told her he wouldn’t live to age 6.
“He’s been a trooper,” she said. “He’s been through so much.”
Ty recently developed a severe infection and is too sick for school. His mother administers 10 doses of antibiotics per day through a port in Ty’s chest. A visiting nurse provides some help with his care.
Meanwhile, Beckman said her only income ended in November when her ex-husband lost his job and discontinued child support payments.
“It’s very frustrating to hear about bailouts when you are just hanging on. It’s all I can do to keep my focus on Ty,” Beckman said, adding that she discontinued cable and her telephone, she’s sold possessions on eBay and most recently took in a tenant.
“It’s not ideal for a single woman and explaining the strange man living in my garage,” she said. “My hands are tied. I’m open to any ideas

Residential Phone Directory to Look Up Personal Numbers No Longer Automatically Delivered in Seven Canadian Cities
Posted on Thu ,29/07/2010 by adminMarket Wire, June, 2010
Residential phone directories, entirely devoted to finding a person, are now available only upon request in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, the Ottawa-Gatineau area and Quebec City. Yellow Pages Group (YPG), Canada’s largest print, online and mobile directory provider, launched this initiative in accordance with changing user habits around the way people look for residential numbers.
“An increasing number of Canadians, particularly in urban areas, use our online and mobile resources YellowPages.ca and Canada411.ca to find residential phone numbers,” said Marc P. Tellier, President and CEO of Yellow Pages Group. “Our priority with the residential directory is to make listings available to all users in the format of their choice. All who wish to receive a printed directory can request one while those who prefer to use our online or mobile resources will be equally supported.”
In 2005, YPG implemented a 24-month distribution cycle of the residential directory in select Canadian cities, with residents having to request a directory during non-distribution years. The resulting demand for the residential directory averaged below one percent while searches for personal phone numbers on YPG online properties have almost doubled since the program’s inception.
“The results of our 24-month initiative clearly indicate that large urban centres are ready for a residential directory by request only program,” continued Tellier.
The distribution by request of the residential directory will result in a reduction of paper consumption, decreasing residential directory distribution by over 5 million copies per year across Canada.
NO CHANGE TO YELLOW PAGES DIRECTORY DISTRIBUTION
In the seven markets no longer automatically receiving their residential directory, distribution of the Yellow Pages directory will continue on an annual basis. The Yellow Pages directory is used to find a business by category or by name and features local environmental information and government resources

GLOBAL PINOY THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE, THE

Recent news about domestics in Singapore, many of them Filipinos, being subjected to unfair wage reductions on top of unreasonable deductions is just one more example of the hardships that overseas Filipino workers have to endure.
Going abroad and landing a job that earns a decent wage is like going through the eye of a needle.
In Singapore the wages of hapless domestics are docked for breakage, for unauthorized consumption of food and drinks, and for the fees imposed by employment agencies. They can go for as long as six months without receiving wages in order to pay off debts. It is virtual slavery.
But even that is not as heart-rending as the fate of Baby, a young girl from Albay. She had managed to go to Lebanon to work as a maid in a wealthy household, just shortly before the recent war broke out.
Baby’s employers were literally starving her, giving her only rice to eat and nothing else. The Filipino maid in another household in the same condominium complex learned about her plight and took pity on her. Behind the backs of their employers, Baby would lower a plastic bag to the unit below and her kababayan would fill that with food.
No longer able to stand the cruel treatment, Baby escaped and found employment in the home of an elderly couple. She was treated much better, but the fighting broke out. She and other Filipino maids found their way to the Philippine Embassy from where they were shipped back to the Philippines. All she brought home from her two months of torment was one dollar.
Yet, the rewards for the lucky ones are considerable, especially in Europe. At 10 an hour, which is a relatively low rate, but still almost equivalent to US$20, a maid in London can earn as much as P7,500 a day or just a shade below P200,000 a month.
It was thus with a deep sigh that I watched a Manila TV program showing young women taking a special course in order to become “super-maids.” They were being taught, not only the finer points of cleaning the house and doing other menial tasks, but also how to apply first aid in an emergency, and how to care for an infant.
It struck me that the only difference between what they would be doing in a foreign household and the duties of Filipino nurses in hospitals is that the latter need to take a government-qualifying exam.
But, like the domestics, nurses are being exploited, too-and the exploitation starts even before they leave for abroad.
The recent scandal involving the alleged leakage of test questions in the last board exams for nurses has revealed a racket in the review classes and another racket in the postexam ceremonials that generate big bucks for the perpetrators.
I had written an article about the fact that the alleged “leakage” could not have affected the results of the nursing test, because of the fact that out of 2,500 questions submitted by nursing board examiners, only 500 questions would eventually be chosen by a computer and printed close to the hour of the exams.
In other words, even if the questionnaires containing the 2,500 questions were to be released, those taking the exams would still not be sure of passing. Small wonder then that the passing rate was a pitiful 41.2 percent.
But I pointed out that the companies offering review classes and ostensibly leaking the test questions were raking in a lot of money. Cora Aonuevo, a professor at the UP College of Nursing, confirmed this in an e-mail:

Egalitarianism appears to be on the minds of the countrys leading casualwear brands as they try to expand into other markets. Penshoppe recently hosted a sumptuous sit-down dinner during Philippine Fashion Week to announce that its clothes are not only for teens but for everyone, including the upmarket dinner guests, who can wear their Penshoppe tees with their Marc Jacobs jackets or Chanel bags.
Bench, with its Filipino-inspired new collection and its Pinoy Lab statement tees, says it has united the common people into a fashionable stance, stressing that the brand built on celebrity endorsements is for a large community of people with no specific gender, age, or race. Benchs Pinoy statement tees are fun and can cut across demographicswho can, after all, thumb their noses at an I Heart Adobo shirt? The Filipino formalwear riffs on shirts and jackets are likewise genius. Here are our creatives finally taking aspects of our heritage into wonderful design tangents

A guitar is great, but it doesn't cut like a knife

To Matt Pike, his guitar is simply a tool.
A knife, on the other hand, is an investment.
To some, the frontman of Oakland power trio High on Fire is considered a guitar god, with a never-ending supply of colossal riffs he unleashes on his customized nine-string axe, but as much as he values his guitars for helping him achieve his musical goals, he is unsentimental about them.
“I collect knives. I collect guitars in a way because I have to, but I think there are lots of guitars that are worth more money than they should be worth. A knife is made out of stainless steel. It’s the kind of thing that won’t break down. Something made out of wood isn’t going to last forever; it’s going to warp and crack,” he said over the phone from an Oakland bar where he was drinking a whisky and coke and showing off his latest purchase to a friend — a transplant surgeon.
“It’s so bad-ass,” he says. “It’s a French knife and has little bumblebees on it. It was $150 bucks but it was worth it.”
The fact Pike collects knives sounds like something he should do, along with slaying dragons, fighting sea creatures and throwing lightning bolts at mountains. Over the past 12 years, High on Fire has released five albums that draw from the new wave of British heavy metal, sludge, doom, stoner rock and thrash. Its latest, Snakes for the Divine, draws on stories from H.P. Lovecraft and the conspiracy theories of British author David Icke, who believes the world is run by a network of secret societies and that humans were created from a reptilian race who rule the world.
“I think they make the best metal songs of all time,” Pike says of Icke’s work. “I believe a lot of it, but there’s a kind of literary conjecture too.
“Lovecraft is the best songwriter of all time. His short horror stories are the best.”
The inspiration behind Pike’s subject matter may be the subject of much debate, but there’s no denying it makes for powerful, inventive music that has been gathering more fans with each new release, including getting positive reviews in mainstream publications such as the New York Times and Mojo.
The band’s previous two albums, Blessed Black Wings (2005) and Death Is This Communion (2007), both made the Winnipeg Free Press’s albums of the year list.
“It doesn’t surprise me. It’s long earned. They should have been doing that years ago,” the 37-year-old says of the attention.
Pike got his start playing with stoner metal outfit Sleep in the 1990s. The group disbanded following their label’s rejection of their third album Dopesmoker, a single song that clocked in at more than an hour

Almost all effective organizations big or small
Posted on Wed ,28/07/2010 by adminAlmost all effective organizations big or small hire CPAs to supervise their accounting systems, their taxation procedures, as well as their financial flow. Many a times, CPAs even give advice to these very organizations on strategic business moves, as well as smart investing and spending. This is possible because of their great range of experience in the field of business and accounting. Therefore, many companies look for CPAs. Working with these companies is definitely a good job opportunity for CPAs.
CPAs can also function autonomously, wherein they are not attached to any organization. They are available as advisors or consultants to various organizations, individuals and small businesses for a predefined fee, depending on what the nature of the accounting work is and how long it will take. However, such do not pay CPAs as well as jobs with organizations. But in the long run, with the right clients, they can prove to be very rewarding.
A lot of job agencies provide jobs for CPAs, and they give placements according to the needs in different companies.

One of the best professional experiences
Posted on Wed ,28/07/2010 by adminOne of the best professional experiences I have ever had was working for an adolescent drug treatment center for a good part of the eighties. I certainly didn?t make much money there, but what I learned during those six plus years was priceless.
HALTS is an acronym commonly used in substance abuse treatment that can be very usefully applied to stress management. A HALTS approach to managing our stress recommends that we avoid getting too Hungry Angry Lonely Tired Scared.
Let?s take a look at each of these five stressors and how to avoid them.
Hungry – Although food comes immediately to mind (when doesn?t it?), there are many other things for which we can ?hunger.? We all need a sense of worth, connection to others and to something bigger than ourselves, appreciation, and many others. Miss out on some of these basic emotional needs for very long and we can end up stressed out, sad or depressed.
Tip: Stay connected to people and situations that help you meet these needs in a healthy way. Avoid those who don?t as much as possible.
Angry – Anger is a huge source of stress. I get angry, you get angry, all God’s children get angry.
